St Mary’s Grove, TW9

Place Name

Also spelt St Marys Grove. For a short time between 1870 and 1880 this was called Mitre Road after the pub that is halfway down the road. The current name comes from a row of houses called St Mary’s Villas, which was off today’s Sheen Road then called Marshgate Road. These separated Hickey Almshouses with the Church Estate Almshouses. As for the name St Mary’s until 1870, this area was still included in the Parish of St Mary Magdalene before Holy Trinity Parish was established. The road itself was tree-lined hence the use of grove.
