Thomas Sutton (1532 – 1611) was a lawyer perhaps most famous as the founder of Charterhouse and of Charterhouse School. Originally from Lincoln after returning from a continental tour in the 16thCentury he became Elizabeth I’s Master of Ordnance in the North. He sailed his own ship against the Armada of 1588. Afterwards he settled in Homerton and furnished his house, it is said, with items from the battle, he retired to Charterhouse, where he set up a home for retired men.
