Strand Drive, TW9

Place Name

Like Strand in Westminster it comes from the Old English stond, meaning the edge of a river such as a bank or shore, in this case the River Thames. However this is a relatively modern name, as it was only laid out in the late 20thCentury around the time that the National Archives were moved here. Before that, this was the site of the Ministry of Labour which was built here between the First and Second World Wars on agricultural land.
