Luke Allsopp Square, RM10

Place Name

Sapper Luke Allsopp, from North London, was a bomb disposal expert who was serving with 33 Engineer Regiment (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) when he was illegally killed alongside Staff Sergeant Simon Cullingworth while in Iraq in 2012. The pair were listed as missing in action after their vehicle came under an attack on a British convoy near the southern city of Basra. They were captured by Iraqi troops and their bodies were later discovered having died of gunshot wounds in an Iraqi military intelligence compound. Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Troulan, the Commanding Officer of 33 Engineer Regiment (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), said at the time: “Luke Allsopp was a very capable individual who was well liked within the Squadron, and a valued team member. He had served within bomb disposal in Cyprus and Kenya. He leaves behind a loving family and girlfriend, Katy.” Soon after the development of 12 bungalows was completed in 2013 locals complained that it looked nothing like the designs they had been shown and dubbed it Fort Dagenham.
