Hill Street, TW9

Place Name

Like Hill Rise, which this road leads onto the name is literal, the road leading to the hill. James Green, Judith Filson, and Margaret Watson in The Streets of Richmond and Kew explain: “The road must have existed since early times (possibly Saxon) as part of the way from Kingston to Shene manor house. There were houses on the south west side in the 15th century… The Manor rental survey map of 1771 shows Hill Street stretching up to the end of West Bancroft Shot, the border of [Sir John] Houlblon’s land in May Bush Shot. The 1780 Rate Book also names it as Hill Street. In the 19th century the section from Ormond Road to The Vineyard was generally called Upper Hill Street.”
