Place Name
A relatively late redevelopment, this small square, off Hill Rise, wasn’t opened until 1978. It is named after Holbrook House – the name of which could come from one of two sources (who may or may not have been related). The first, mentioned in the 1726 rate book, refers to the occupier as being “Late Hollbrook now Mrs Bridges”. By 1830 a Frederick Holbrook Esq was registered as living there – if there was any family relationship has not been determined. But by the 1851 Census the house was occupied by William Roebuck, late Captain 11th Hussars. The house was sold in 1859 having at some stage been converted into a school.
