Fortis Green Avenue, N2

Place Name

First mentioned in the early 17thCentury as Fortessegreene and later, in 1638, as Fortes Greene. Having been corrupted to Forty Green in 1754, it reverted back to its origins becoming Fortis Green in 1813. David Mills in A Dictionary of London Place Names writes: “From Middle English grene ‘village green, hamlet’ with an uncertain first element, possibly the surname of some local family.”
