Hampstead Heights, N2

Place Name

Actually in East Finchley, at around 300 feet above sea level this does look down on Hampstead Garden Suburb. Hampstead itself was documented as Hemstede even before the Norman Conquest in AD959, it means a home or dwelling place, coming from two Anglo-Saxon words, ham and stede. Today we would use Homestead. By the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 it had become Hamestede.
