This was Distillers Yard in the mid 18thCentury when John Rocque was drawing up his map of London. In 1692 Sir James Bateman (April 26, 1660 – November 10, 1718) merchant and MP, bought part of the former precinct of Holywell Priory, within a decade it was featured on William Horwood’s Plan as Batemans Row. He went on to become Lord Mayor of London and Governor of the Bank of England. This street which marked the northern boundary of his land remained in the family until the death of the second Viscount Bateman in 1802.
