Place Name

This was Distillers Yard in the mid 18thCentury when John Rocque was drawing up his map of London. In 1692 Sir James Bateman (April 26, 1660 – November 10, 1718) merchant and MP, bought part of the former precinct of Holywell Priory, within a decade it was featured on William Horwood’s Plan as Batemans Row. He went on to become Lord Mayor of London and Governor of the Bank of England.¬†This street which marked the northern boundary of his land remained in the family until the death of the second Viscount Bateman in 1802.
