In 1692 Sir James Bateman (April 26, 1660 – November 10, 1718), merchant and MP, bought part of the former precinct of Holywell Priory. A century later, by 1792, the street was featured on William Horwood’s Plan as Batemans Row. Bateman went on to become Lord Mayor of London and Governor of the Bank of England. This street which marked the northern boundary of his land remained in the family until the death of the second Viscount Bateman in 1802. Formerly, Distillers Yard.
