Willow Cottages, TW9

Place Name

Part of the Twiggets area development of Kew Green after the 1823 Enclosure Act had allocated the land to King George IV. This area by the River Thames had previously been used for harvesting osiers (willows) and rushes from the river bank to make hurdles and baskets, while the reeds were used for thatching or covering the floors. By the end of the 19thCentury these industries were in decline and the land was sold for housing.
