Peldon Court, TW9

Place Name

This area was originally known as Peldon, a part of Marshgate (today’s Sheen Road). By 1851 there eight villas built near here that perpetuated the name. More development followed and by the 20thCentury an access road was needed originally known as Peldon Avenue, it is mentioned in Kelly’s Directory of 1904. But in September 1940, this small estate of 50 properties was flattened during an air raid, with only one house surviving. For a time it was used as a site for prefabricated housing, but these were cleared away in the mid-1950s as Peldon Court was built by Richmond Council between 1958 and 1960. The name remains a mystery, although there is a village called Peldon just outside of Colchester, Essex.
