Parke Road, SW13

Place Name

Charlotte Alice Parke (1828 –  January 5, 1908) was the wife of William Lowther. Lowther, of Campsea Ashe and Lowtherlodge, was the brother of the third Earl of Lonsdale, who became a major landowner in the area following his inheritance of the large St Anns estate. Ms Parke was the  youngest daughter of Sir James Parke, a formidable lawyer who in 1856 was made the first life peer (as Lord Wensleydale) to sit in the House of Lords. The creation led to protests by peers who had inherited their own titles, and, since Parke was elderly and had no male heirs to pass the title on to, he too was made a hereditary lord. Parke and Lowther married on December 17, 1853 and the part went on to have six children including James Lowther, 1st Viscount Ullswater, who was Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Gerard Lowther, a diplomat, and Major Henry Cecil Lowther, Military Attache to the British Embassy in Paris. She died of pneumonia at Campsea Ashe, in Suffolk.
