Montgomery Close, DA15

Place Name

Named after the SS Richard Montgomery, an American Liberty ship, used to carry ammunition during the World War Two. The ship was wrecked off the Nore sandbank in the Thames Estuary, near Sheerness, in 1944, while carrying munitions. Around 1,400 tonnes of explosives remain on board, which continue to be a significant hazard.
