Idol Lane, EC3M

Place Name

One potential clue to the meaning of the name comes from an early spelling as featured on Ogilby and Morgan’s Large Scale Map of the City as Rebuilt by 1676. In that it was spelt Idle Lane suggesting that this street had no trade taking place or that it was a hang-out for idlers. The Old English word īdel, meaning empty or worthless came into use sometime around 1300.
