Crofton Park Road, SE4

Place Name

Although the name has ancient origins, a Crofton was an Old English term for a farm on or by a rounded hill, it was a relatively recent addition to this part of Lewisham. It first appeared on maps in 1892 as the name of the then new railway station, prior to that the area was just included as part of Brockley. Ironically, the area now defined as Crofton Park is probably the closest to the historic centre of Brockley, but the name had already been used for a different station.
