Conduit Court, WC2E

Place Name

The name suggests it was connected with a water channel but in fact it comes from an innkeeper in Long Acre called Leonard Cunditt who was paying rates in the newly built court – which started sometime around 1686 and completed by 1690. As for the name Cunditt is thought to be ultimately derived from the Middle English/Old French word conduit, which denoted a water channel.
