Place Name

This is an access road to Barwell Court, which was first mentioned Berewelle in 1242 from the Old English words bere meaning barley and wella meaning a spring or a stream. By 1375 the name of the Manor House changed to Berewell and by the time Rocque placed it on his map it was referred to as Burrel Court, only taking on its current spelling around the beginning of the 19thCentury, and was featured on the Ordnance Survey map of 1819.
