Place Name
Named after the US state. It was originally a hamlet, which had grown up around a large house built by a merchant who had made his fortune in the New World. Maryland itself was named following a charter Lord Baltimore received from King Charles I calling the new colony to be called Maryland in honour of his wife Queen Henrietta Maria (Queen Mary). The Stratford name was first recorded in the 17thCentury.
