Woodfield Crescent, W5

Place Name

Takes its name from the original agricultural land that was developed in 1901 by six working men who got together to buy a plot for nine houses. That same year they formed a co-partnership called Ealing Tenants Ltd. to build terraces in Woodfield Avenue, Woodfield Crescent, and Brunner Road, with support from Leopold de Rothschild and others. This was the first true garden suburb and the start of a national movement which led to similar tenants’ associations being formed at Letchworth (Hertfordshire) and Sevenoaks (Kent) in 1905 and later at Hampstead.
