Woffington Close, KT1

Place Name

Margaret Woffington (October 18, 1720 – March 28, 1760), known by her stage name as Peg Woffington was an 18thCentury actress who lived in Teddington. Originally from an impoverished family in Dublin, she was discovered by a performer and agent while she was going door-to-door selling watercress. Her success in early theatrical productions, partly on account of her beauty, ensured that she drew a number of admirers and sponsors. She left for London and spent many years on the stage winning over the crowds and many influential and wealthy lovers. She retired to Teddington. Shortly before she died she had built and endowed by her will some local almshouses. She was buried in the Teddington parish church graveyard at St Mary’s.
