William Petty Way, BR5

Place Name

William Petty was a market gardener who grew fruit in the area until 1893, writes Sally Pennington of the Orpington History Organisation. In 1862 an Ordnance Survey map showed some cottages which had been built near his original field. The surrounding area was called Ramsden and by 1920 the cottages were known as Ramsden Cottages. Petty may have been the builder of properties.
