Place Name

This modern road remembers an old name White Lion Wharf, which is thought to have been named after a late 18thCentury inn. There were plenty of names that could have been chosen in John Rocque’s Map of 1746 as the River Thames was lined with Dung Wharf, Common Lane, Heppers Wharfe. White Lion Wharf makes an appearance in Richard Horwood’s plan by the late 18thCentury.
