After the Wheatley family, Lords of the Manor of Erith in the 18th and 19thCenturies. The Wheatleys were a military family. General Sir William Wheatley, of the 1st Foot Guards, fought alongside Wellington in the Peninsular Wars that ran from 1807 – 1814 against Napoleon’s armies. He died of typhoid fever on September 1, 1812 and was buried near Madrid. A memorial was erected at the request of Wellington.
