Place Name
Described by John Field in Place Names of Greater London as being “paradoxically arranged” this is one of four streets named after directions of the compass – only laid out so as to be confusing. Northern Road is parallel to Eastern Road (on the West side of it) and Western Road (on the Eastern side of it). All three roads used to meet Southern Road, which is to the South. But the southern half of Northern Road has been demolished to make way for Plaistow Primary School and Southern Road Primary School and ends at Junction Road.
