Directional. The road leading to Welling. Several reasons have been given as to how the settlement of Welling got its name. The most likely is that it is named after a family of early 14thCentury landowners called either Welling or Willing. It was written as Wellyngs in 1362. It has also been suggested that it is a corruption of well end, so called after ones safe arrival there having passed the dreaded Shooters Hill, or that it simply comes from the Old English word wella meaning a well or spring.
