Warwick Lane, EC4M

Place Name

Named after the Neville family, the earls of Warwick, who owned a house near here in the 1400s. The lane was first recorded in 1257 as Eldedeneslane and during the following century as Oldeneslane, literally Old Dean’s Lane, which is thought to be a reference to the former deans of St Paul’s Cathedral who had a house here. By 1475 it had begun to be recorded as Werwyk Lane and Warwyke lane some 30 years later, but its former name persisted and in 1513 it was written as Eldens lane alias Warwik lane.
