Place Name

Previously named Church Alley. This was the site of the Royal Wardrobe, a property bought by Edward III in 1359 from Sir John Beauchamp, to house the administrative body known as ‘the Great Wardobe’ which looked after the monarch’s ceremonial robes, or as it was put the “cloaths of state, beds, hangings and other necessaries” which had previously been held in Wardrobe Tower (at the Tower of London) . It was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666.
