Vyner Street, E2

Place Name

This name recalls the Vyner family, who were fomer lords of the Hackney manor of Kingshold. Sir Robert Vyner (1631 – September 2, 1688), was sheriff of London during the time of the Great Fire of London, and became Lord Mayor in 1674. Like his uncle, Sir Thomas Vyner to whom he was apprenticed, he was a banker and goldsmith. His work included producing the jewel-studded replica of the Crown of St Edward and the King’s Orb, used for Charles II’s coronation in 1661, the year he was appointed as the king’s goldsmith.
