Ulysses Place, E20

Place Name

Named after the Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson, poem published in 1842, the last line of which “To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield” is engraved into the centre of the village. East Village was built on the site of the former Athletes’ Village which was redeveloped on former industrial land. The poem is based on Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, telling the story of the Greek King of Ithaca who spent a decade returning home from the Trojan war. Stratford underwent a huge amount of new development ahead of the 2012 London Olympic Games and many new streets were created and named after this global celebration of sport.
