Tugela Street, SE6

Place Name

Named after the Battle of Tugela Heights, which ran from February 14 until February 27, 1900 during the Second Boer War. In which General Sir Redvers Buller’s British victorious army forced Louis Botha’s Boer army to lift the Siege of Ladysmith. Patriotic developers would often name streets after major battles fought for the British Empire. This road is shown laid out but not developed on land that was marked as Rutland Park Nursery on the 1900 Ordnance Survey map.
