Trinder Road, N19

Place Name

The Reverend Daniel Trinder (1828 – April 2, 1888) was Perpetual Curate of St Michael’s, Highgate, from 1878 until his death and its east window remembers him in stained glass. Trinder, who entered the church after Oxford University, was a moderate High Churchman. He was vicar of St Mary’s in Teddington between 1857 and 1878. During his time there he caused a split in the congregation with some parishioners objecting to his “popish” practices, which included removing the old pews, introducing Hymns Ancient and Modern and preaching in a surplice. They left to found the rival Christ Church, in 1864. Trinder was therefore an interesting choice to be offered St Michael’s. The previous incumbent, C B Dalton, son-in-law of Charles Blomfield, Bishop of London, had earlier caused offence by placing a small cross on the altar. From January 1887 Trinder was a member of Hornsey School Board and in the same year Rural Dean of Highgate.
