Originally part of the Selwyn family estate it later became grazing ground attached ton the castigate Barracks and then by the mid-20thCentury was acquired by Richmond Council and leased out as the Kew Topiary Nurseries producing elegantly shaped trees and shrubs. Councillors had planned to use the land for some educational purpose but instead sold it developers who proposed an 18 storey tower block. Following a campaign by local residents it was reduced to just four.
