Tootswood Road, BR2

Place Name

Probably named after the same Anglo-Saxon root as Tothill, in Westminster, which comes from tote hill meaning a look-out hill or an artificial mound. Indeed the earliest known settlement was an Iron Age hillfort at Toots Wood. There where traces of a Roman Camp where traces of ancient pottery were found, the remains themselves still featured on maps as recently as 1890.
