Tom Nolan Close, E15

Place name

Like Jack Clow Road, this is named after a former mayor of Newham. The position was established in 1965 with the creation of the London Borough of Newham, which replaced East Ham and West Ham. Thomas Nolan had represented the St Stephens ward seat as a Labour councillor from 1971. He became mayor in 1985. His seat was taken by Catherine Parry in an October 1988 by-election following his death. A directly elected mayor of Newham was established in 2002 and the position was renamed as the civic ambassador, and the office was discontinued in 2009.  Leads onto Alan Hocken Way, named after local authority officer, Alan Hocken.
