The Chine, N21

Place Name

Part of the Grange Park Estate. A somewhat fanciful name for this road that leads up to Bush Hill crossing Salmon’s Brook. A chine is a word is peculiar to Dorset and the Isle of Wight (think Blackgang Chine) and means a deep, narrow ravine cut through soft rocks by a water course descending steeply to the sea. It may have been that the developer, Richard Metherell who lived at Elmscott on Bush Hill, had enjoyed a holiday on the island and took inspiration. In any case the first houses in The Chine were advertised in the Southgate Recorder, in June 1908.
