Tanyard Lane, DA5

Place name

It is a historic lane marked on the 1840 Tithe Map and is bridged by the railway line. The name commemorates the area’s leather tanning industry. Until development began in the late 19thCentury, many Bexley villagers worked the land or in the mills. But there were also dirty industries such as leather tanning in Tan Yard Lane which neighboured the poor house.
