Tabernacle Street, EC2A

Place Name

In 1567 this was a road which ran alongside a meadow that was home to three windmills and known as Windmill Hill. In 1740, George Whitefield, who along with the Wesley brothers had been one of the founders of Methodism, travelled to America. Whitefield, who was a leader in the American Great Revival of Christianity, had by this stage split from the Wesleys and his supporters built a Tabernacle here to propagate his own religious ideas.
