Sudbrook Gardens, TW10

Place Name

A stream running on the south near Petersham was recorded here in 1332 as Suthbrok which gave the area its name as Sudbrook. This in turn gave the name to the Duke of Argyll’s residence Sudbrook House which he had built between 1726 and 1728 to the designs of James Gibbs on the site of the old mansion. However, the gardens referred to belong to a totally separate home, Sudbrook Lodge, rebuilt in about 1680 by Elizabeth Wigington, daughter of a timber merchant. Wigington’s descendants sold land to the north to the Argylls which became the kitchen garden of the main residence, and more recently was developed as a small residential area.
