Yeoman William (died 1484) and Alice Stubber bought land in North Ockendon that was to form the Stubbers estate, which they bought and named in 1439, although it had been referred to in documents dated more than a century earlier, in 1334. By the early 17thCentury it was the home of William Coys, a well known botanist. who collected both native and exotic plants and seeds, which he planted in his walled garden that subsequently provided plants for the establishment of Kew Gardens. The house was demolished in 1955 and the grounds became the Stubbers Activity Centre in 2011.
