Place Name
Originally Station Road, although why is hard to fathom as the nearest stations are some distance away, which may explain why the name was changed. This was laid out over Starch Green, which by the mid-19thCentury was, like much of the local area, being dug for earth to make bricks. It is estimated that between 1870 and 1890 more than 17 million bricks were produced, and the Stamford Brook Brickfield, covering over 50 acres at its peak, employed 250 men and boys. The Map of the Parish of Hammersmith in the County of Middlesex, prepared and published by the Vestry Clerk Alfred James Roberts, in 1853, reveals that a lake was formed by the removal of the brick earth, giving the field it’s name. The road was laid out in 1878.
