Rear Admiral John Stanton (1730 – August 24, 1796) lived at a property on the south side of Milbourne House at the end of the 18thCentury. During his naval career he fought against the French off Madras in 1758. In November 1770 he joined the force to fight off the Spanish fleet – backed by the French fleets – were was laying claim to the Falkland Islands. He rook part in several other campaigns before retiring in 1787. On July 6, 1780 he married Elizabeth Partington, of Holborn, whose family owned the Melbourne estate since the middle of the 18thCentury.
