St Cross Street, EC1N

Place Name

This was laid out over the grounds of Hatton House when it was knocked down in 1659 and was originally called plain Cross Street. The name however was very common – there used to be at least 18 Cross Streets in the capital – and a source of confusion, so in 1937 the London County Council beatified the name, which apparently is a reference to the Holy Cross.
