Spenser Road, SE24

Place Name

Edmund Spenser (sometime around 1553 – January 13, 1599) was a Tudor poet best known for The Faerie Queene. This is one of four roads in Herne Hill known as Poets’ Corner. The others being Chaucer Road, Shakespeare Road and Milton Road. They were laid out when the former Effra Farm was acquired by the Westminster Freehold Land Society in 1855. Building work sped up with the arrival of the railway in 1862.
