Place Name
Edward John Sidney Christian Welbore Ellis Agar (1910 – 1967) was Viscount Somerton, a lieutenant in the Royal Horse Guards and heir to the Earldom of Normanton, who owned land here. As the fifth Earl he was at one time an amateur jockey and one of the few peers to have ridden in the Grand National. As befitting a family whose motto is Via Trita Via Tuta (The well-worn path is the safe path) they are not noted for much, indeed the obituary of the fourth Earl of Normanton featured more on his property than on his life. However, the fifth Earl married twice, the first time in scandal when in April 1936 he began an affair with a Mrs Barbara Mary Prior Palmer, her husband sued for divorce which went uncontested. The couple married a week after the decree nisi was granted. The road was named in 1926.
