Skinners Lane, EC4R

Place Name

A rather literal, if late, name as it comes from the skin and fur trade that was centred around here in the medieval period and continued to thrive until well into the 20thCentury. Skinners’ Hall on nearby Dowgate Hill was established by the time of Henry III. This was originally Maiden Lane, probably after the sign of a tavern, but had changed by 1950, presumably to avoid confusion with the Maiden Lane in the West End.
