Sheen Wood, SW14

Place Name

Built in 1937 but only after a huge local protest against a proposed development of flats. The road takes its name from a mansion called Sheen Wood, previously known as St Croix, which according to The Times “was the seat until last winter of one of Mortlake’s oldest families.” The house was bought by a firm of local builders who applied to Barnes Council for plans to erect a block of flats and garages. After a petition signed by more than 500 residents the application was turned down. An appeal to, oddly, the Minister of Health saw the decision upheld. However, the house was later demolished and replaced with a number of houses. It remains a private road.
