Place Name

A reference to the nearby area of Shacklewell, which is thought to mean a well where animals were tethered but it is not clear, from the Old English words sceacol, meaning shackle and wella, well. One of the earliest mentions of the name was as Shekelwell in 1491 and spelt as Shakylwell in 1509.
