Seymour Gardens, TW13

Place Name

Jane Seymour (about 1508 – October 24, 1537), the third wife of Henry VIII who served as Queen of England from 1536 to 1537. This is situated at the centre of the original Hanworth Castle, a royal Tudor hunting lodge where Elizabeth I spent part of her childhood and sometimes stayed during her reign. The castle was rebuilt on its present site, the now derelict Hanworth Park House, in 1797. Jane became betrothed to the king the day after Anne Boleyn’s execution, and in stark contrast to Anne, was said to be strict and formal, swiftly putting a stop to some of the extravagances of the queen’s household. In October 1537 she gave the king the son and heir he so long desired, however less than two weeks after the birth, died of postnatal complications. Their son would later become King Edward VI. Jane was the only of Henry’s six wives to receive a queen’s funeral, and is buried beside him in St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. Along with Elizabeth Way, Castle Way, Moat Side, Queens Avenue, Shakespeare Way and Raleigh Way, this is one of a number of nearby streets commemorating Hanworth Castle.
