Rushout Avenue, HA3

Place Name

This honour belongs to Lady Alice Rushout, wife of Sir James Rushout, who inherited the manor of Harrow in 1666 following the death of her father, Edmund Pitt. James Rushout was created a knight in 1661 and although the family unsuccessfully tried to sell the manor off in 1764, they later became the Barons of Northwick in 1797. The title ended, when the 3rd baron, Sir George Rushout-Bowles, died in 1887, although the inheritance descended to the Spencer-Churchills. Northwick Park is on land which was once part of the manor, and was the agricultural land of Sheepcote Farm until the 20thCentury.
